STEREOTYPING BY OSMOSIS
Infants, by lacking discernment or speech abilities, over-simplify a person, place, thing, or situation–assessing it only from a “is it for me or against me” perspective. Even before their first birthday, babies are highly selective—discriminating as to whom they will pay attention–preferring those of their “in-group” (“people like me”)—wasting no time on those they deem unlikely to “deliver the goods.” By age 11 months, they focus on those speaking to them a language familiar while ignoring foreign speakers. At the defining moment babies make those decisions, their brain waves indicate an “expectation to learn something new”. As detected in anticipatory moments by electroencephalogram, it is a “theta” oscillation wave pattern–a state of very deep relaxation since brain waves are slowed to a frequency of 4-7 cycles per second—a state for retaining memories and feelings. In this state, one is able to create any and everything so as to instantly change ones views of reality by governing the Subconscious lying between ones Conscious and Unconscious—a state directing inspired Knowledge, Beliefs, and behaviors to be Spiritual. As normal development proceeds, Babies “Us vs. Them” judgments, resulting from an in-born drive for information, become ever more generalized and powerful with age—but without excluding “the Others”. Infancy driven desires to learn new things makes them discriminating judges of those to whom is worth listening. Heightened valuations of optimal informants are same group members—with cumulative damage from poor quality information. Children, in categorizing Creatures and Creations in order to make sense of the world, evolve into sort of stereotyping people according to Group Membership. Then they attribute to groups those human-made acceptable or indifference Stereotypes into which they have been socialized. If socialized into a cultural Spiritual Elements atmosphere, children thereafter respect the Social Harmony, Humanity, and Dignity present in all humans and demonstrate Respect by means of possessing Good Manners. Such was “normal” in my all-Black community as a boy, with its “ME/WE” focus.
But, if children are socialized into a culture consisting of Selfhood weak people, savages or Brutes with a “Dark Side,” Non-Rational Patterned and Superficial thinkers, or people who crave fear, then children absorb the Indifference/Hate/Evil/Sadism atmosphere by “Osmosis”. The nature of their Personalities conform to the nature of their socializing culture. Some children are put on the “Anti-Humanity” path and follow its flow so that by “going along, they get along” with their in-group. Those who do/do not get pleasure from horror films may gain stereotypical images from them within the setting of Mild, Slight, Moderate, and Extreme Fears. Some become “daredevil” risk-takers. Otherwise, all perceived Fear sources—whether realistic, distorted, or fantasized–are stereotyped and hated to varying degrees. The fearful react by becoming more inflexible and dogmatic about what they believe; internalize the values of their presumed protectors, while shrinking behind them. They make a panicky retreat into Self-Absorption—viewing everything within ones world in relationship to oneself and also following dictates of the Crowd and other External World influences. Such is associated with ones now activated and orchestrating Brain’s Amygdala—a temporal lobe alarm center just under ones temples. It works with the frontal lobes’ consciousness to increase the Fear Response alertness.
The degree to which ones alarm center pours out Fear hormones and neurotransmitters is largely contributed to by ones immediate society. Yet, Crowds’ concepts are never real. Fears educated into humans are like a disease—every fearful hint is feared it will materialize. This weakens people’s resolve to go on, in spite of unrealistic dangers assumed to be from even faintly resembling fixed Imaged Stereotypes. A self-fulling prophesy is to imagine exact realizations of the feared—then “they die a thousand deaths.” Yet, some are so susceptible to pleasurable relief coming from realizing their Fears were not real as to deliberately seek it out—putting themselves at dangerous risks to get a rush. Hence, many generate the fine spurs of (self-interest) Delusional Fears. Example: “Killer” police’s feigned and unarmed enemies are fantasized in scary scenes so “heros” dramatically come out as winners + getting the “rush” from killing someone else. They are pre-armed with excuses acceptable to their Network—“I feared for my life!”—for which they are excessively rewarded. jabaileymd.com
