SOCIALIZATION IN BLACK vs. WHITE PEOPLE
Broadly, “Socialization” is a society’s series of events (changing realities) in which flows a philosophical system of ideas–ideas displaying as personal and relationship habits, customs, traditions, symbols, speech, media, government, military and police forces which form recognizable Patterns, called “Ethos”. A given Pattern has an outer image + an inner system of Values. In daily living, the system of Values is the Background supplying thoughts and emotional reactions for the Foreground’s expressions and deeds. Each Pattern derives from natural rhythmic cycles of social and environmental experiences shared by all within the culture–cycles recurring often enough for one to observe its identifying aspects over and over in different members of the same society. A reason is that by being in the flow of a given Socialization, all are taught how to think, feel, say, and do in common. Such binds together minds of that society, teaches each how to act, and upholds the order dictated by its leaders—whether human-made or God-made. A generic culture’s Group Mind/Ethos result is it: (1) forms Basic Assumptions leading to fixed Beliefs and its associated emotions, attitudes, and character Values displays —i.e. common group characteristics at a given time period; (2) serves as a guiding philosophy of Values pervading a people to actuate major thought and behavior patterns; (3) guides relational human encounters, as in approaching each other with or without suspicion in ordinary interactions or in professional situations; and (4) under the term “Society’s Common Sense,” imposes Basic Assumption customs and Beliefs on newborns–“delivers” to incomers–and “hands over” to be culturally transmitted from generation to generation. From a newborn’s birth onward, Socialization imposes inhibitions, limitations, and controls for its expressions and actions to conform. I call this the Compromising of Selfhood Power–and it continues throughout life. Regarding certain things, Society must have, at least in theory, a “one-rule-fits–all” way to live and for all to agree on what goes with what–an agreement by Convention—e.g. people share a common nature but are trained in gender roles.
Historically, Socialization in African Tradition has been within the context of “ME/WE” Spirituality that follows Spiritual Elements Guidelines–those leaving room for error as long as one does not get out of the Spiritual Elements flow throughout life. Here, humans are born into a Harmonious Societal “Womb” which nourishes their society’s Spiritual Elements Philosophy of Life (POL). An Organizational Ethos guides relational human encounters, inferred frommathematically determined Processes of Nature. Examples taken from daily living include exhibiting harmonious relationships with and good behaviors towards each other; exchanging words honestly felt; the exercise of ones power that is not at other group members’ expense. The nature of what is espoused is the opposite of deceptions and, also is not designed to impart self-interest gains. Hence, prior to any contact with Europeans, Africans had no jails, no policemen, no divorces, no premarital sex, and no funneling the Elderly into “old folks” homes. Children belong to the community which encourages all youth to maximally develop their individuality and talents for the benefit of the community.
The Ethos of Europeans is completely different. Their society’s “I” or Individualism—derived from suspicious interactions in the cult or in professional situations causing each to stay “distant–are: looking for differences in people, individuality, uniqueness, being competitive, advocating individual rights, separateness, independence, survival of the fittest, and control over Nature (Nobles in Jones, Black Psychology p103). European Ethos POL is based out of Supernatural realms for application solely in the Physical World. Its rigid rules focus on a “Dehumanization” conversion into a military-type “Personalization” system that gets people to “believe” and have “faith” in their human leaders saying they are a mechanical “cog in a machine”. The “Person” aspect carries with it a demand to wear masks and perform masquerades that concern the exact role one is ordered to play. This mechanical organization is based upon Rules analogous to walking a tight-rope—“one slip and one falls” into such harsh punishments—possibly by the Devil and then burn in the Hell the Supernatural society invented. Without questioning anything, the idea is to put trust in this Supernatural System of Organization—and thereby suppress each human’s individuality into “rubber stamp” conformity. jabaileymd.com
