METAPHYSICAL LANGUAGE TERMS
Broadly, “Language” means Intelligible communication. A major form in African Tradition is communication through Spiritual Symbols–e.g. Images, an isolated or series of sounds, like a word or phrases; collections of written Spirtual Literature; certain gestures; a musical harmony or melody; fluids for libations; or whatever has significance through Evocation (possessing mystical powers able to evoke psychic forces). Each transmits “Spirit” to those involved. Messages in these Symbols are “Speculative” or Imaginative” Knowledge–that which explains, orders, and unifies experiences for and with the knower. Since all creatures came into being through the power of Sound, said Ancient Africans, the human voice and the inherent spiritual power of the Spoken Word were thought to gain power from natural rhythms–rhythms each individual acquires from self-knowledge and by ones inner vision regarding, and connections with, Cosmic Rhythms. The power of Sound affects the glandular system and the twelve inner organs called “Chakras” (wheels of light). In turn, “Chakras” secrete hormones in the blood stream for different functions and transmit etheric substances among them which travel from the gonads up to the brain’s pineal gland. This function helps the spiritual evolution of the individual. Then there were Magic Items. Examples included: Magic Signs, said to transmit good luck qualities by means of a prayer or scriptural text; Charms (which, if offensive, is a Talisman; if defensive, an Amulet); and Rites (non-Spell magic actions).
Etymologically, “Language” (“tongue) is subdivided into Figurative and Literal (‘following the letter’ or exact words of the original–thus an unimaginative, matter-of-fact construing of words in their strict sense). In African Tradition the people receive “Elegant Spiritual Transmission” communications in the form of Figures of Speech (FOS) by using symbols/symbolism as a means for conveying a precise and exact rational, if not Supra-Rational, knowledge. Since “Personifying” gives a “person-form” to abstract or lifeless things, its coming “Alive” imparts a personal nature or personal character to the Referent (the ‘Thing’ to which ones words refer). Personifications are particularly useful for: Universal Principles (unchanging realities) intimately involved in ones Selfhood; significant experiences of every human; origins of existence; things about the Cosmos; Humanity elaborations; standards and guides for going through the maze of life; how to reach an ultimate goal while minimizing pain and sorrow; using deities to spotlight an aspect of a person’s Selfhood; and conveying messages for humans via an animal’s character and personality, as exemplified in Fables. These are as much a means of acquiring knowledge as is logical reasoning. For students of Ancient African Spiritual Literature and located anywhere in the world’s diaspora, FOS, whose roots are established in Cosmic Archetypes, are imbued with traditional messages that are relatively timeless.
Western “Lofty Ordinary Transmission” communications are imaginative comparisons, equating to Secular Figures of Speech. Such Figurative Language (“Figures of Rhetoric,” Figures,” Figures of Style,” “Rhetorical Figures”) and “Schemes” (a term the Greeks preferred to “Figures” because they serve as persuasive tricks and rules of thumb)–are historically taught as a different way of seeing–whether right or wrong. They deepen ones subliminal understanding of the person, place, or thing being described. If the structure of language does not have an affected meaning change, even though the order is changed, it is a Figure of Speech (FOS). If the meaning is changed, it is a Trope (turns, conversions)–a Figure of Thought–meaning words or phrases are used in a way that affects a conspicuous change in what is taken to be their standard (literal) meaning. After arriving at the context by Right Brain assessment, one switchs to Rational Thinking in order to expand, elaborate on, and more completely understand the Contextual Thinking. Whereas Spiritual FOS are for the purpose of “touching the Heart,” Secular FOS are words used to create an effect, often where they do not have their original or literal meaning. If someone says; “I’m ‘starving’, this is not about dying of hunger, but instead this hyperbole indicates a high degree of being very hungry. Secular FOS provide multi-directional flexibility for grabbing people’s attention. They are useful for special purposes.
