ABSTRACTION ATTITUDE: One assumes a mental set voluntarily; shifts from one aspect of a situation to another (e.g. from the concrete to the abstracted and back again as demanded by the circumstances) while simultaneously holding in the mind various aspects of a situation; grasps the essentials of a whole into its parts, and isolating them; planning ahead ideationally; assuming an attitude to the merely possible; and thinking or performing symbolically. All this is done voluntarily.
