Although the Old French word “Speculation” (‘spy out’) has wide-ranging and conflicting meanings, its dominant dictionary sense is the propounding of theories and making generalizations around them–both based upon many assumptions for which proof is not possible. In taking advantage of this confusion, attorneys in the Medico-Legal courtroom tried to trick me: “Doctor, didn’t you arrive at your conclusions by speculation?” When this first happened in my capacity as an Independent Medical Examiner for the state of California, I said “yes!” Smugly, in his closing argument he told the judge my opinions were on the ‘Guessing’ [‘no calculations’] end of the “Speculation Scale”—implying my opinions were merely Fantasy (‘unreal’—only in my imagination). Actually, it was a priori reasoning—carefully studying minute case details + my education, training, and experience + relying on African Tradition’s Subjective Science tools—i.e. Observation, Reflection, “Pure” Feelings, Productive Imagination, Contemplation, Inductive and Deductive Inferences, and Common Sense—to make inferences in arriving at circumstantial evidence and judgments. This highly abstract Thinking method had been developed during my specialized training in Medical Genetics and Birth Defects. Of course, “Fantasy” (Greek, ‘make visible as how things seem’; appearance; what is sensed; apparition; perception)—by meaning the capacity to form Images and even Hallucinations (‘astray thoughts’)—is a phantom and has no solid base in reality. This ‘inability to distinguish Fantasy from Reality’ vignette points out how people daily use Fantasy in “SEEMS” right and “ALMOST” enough situations to deceive others and to deceive themselves by ‘self-talk’.
Fetuses in the mother’s womb have sense organs that respond to few stimuli, and then for only a short duration. Following birth, they learn to respond to increasingly larger numbers of stimuli. Hence, they emerge gradually from their Inner World isolation while getting oriented to the External World. Assuming these stimuli are met in a satisfying manner, they crave more and more out-going activity and that stimulates them to personally develop fantasy in Play at two levels. First is using Role Playing to act out what they have developed with their imagination and this cultivates a true respect for the fascinating art of Magic, no matter what its nature. By participating in such fantasy, they script being the “star” in settings as they desire. This puts their minds in a ‘Supernatural box’ that sprouted inside a ‘Natural World Imagination box.’ Second, they Play with their make-believe situation by ‘Acting As If’ what they have fantasized is an actual and already existing reality. This develops a tool of Fantasy for linking with other people’s Fantasies. However, at any point following birth, if the evolution from “Fetuses’ Inner World Isolation” is unsatisfying, they learn to focus on stimuli which leads inwardly to “Air Castle” fantasies. Whether satisfactory or not, Fantasies are mainly Right Brain functions, persisting variously in everyone throughout life. Fantasy is a consciousness form lying between ordinary thought processes and an uncontrolled state of awareness–a form of Imaginative thinking (itself is a brain faculty) controlled more by the Magical Thinking (also a brain faculty) of ones wishes, motives, and emotions than by conditions of the External World—a form of treating events in a manner the rational mind considers impossible or highly unlikely.
Fantasy enables one to dissolve boundaries between unrelated things, to put boundaries on the boundless, and to declare bounded things (e.g. physical and social world laws) as boundless—all for the purpose of making people and events appear as one wishes. The free play of associations between ideas far removed from the realistic realm gives rise to Fancy and that is what creates the “larger than life” aspect which characterizes the Supernatural. To be distinguished is the brilliant “Productive Creative Imagination.” It consists of a flowing visual stream of dramatic sequences–as Images, Metaphors, Symbols, Icons—each forming major parts of ones internal world of experiencing. Magical Thinking orchestrated Fantasy is Imagination working freely within normal guide-lines while flowing along like a stream. Hence, ones mind is released from all parameters of the Natural World and thereby allowing ones Fantasy Imagination to roam about. Still, ones mind is usually subtly guided somewhat by Unconscious urges, concerns, and memories. jabaileymd.
