CRITICALLY THINKING FAÇADES (39)
“Façade” (a false front; shape imposed on something) is a Thing intended to create a false impression—as of gentility. Its background concept originated in Africa by Ritual Specialists (c30,000 BC) using masks and masquerades to cure psychosomatic disease caused by disharmonious spirits. Primitive Africans resorted to all sorts of songs, dance, delusions, and dramatic tricks to either appease or control the spirits. Griots, skilled storytellers, employed their voice, hands, and bodies to best effect while mimicking the antics of the story’s main character. As the story unfolded, the audience participated through interpolations (putting in new words and passages). This feature of hiding and displaying moods to influence or control nature, the gods, and human affairs + persuading, informing, entertaining, expressing, sharing, teaching, instructing, educating, recreating (e.g. playing with words in figures of speech and figures of thought), or serving as a call to action spread throughout the world. Of particular significance were the Etruscans who dominated Italy’s northwestern coast from c900 to 300 BC. They brought all elements of Black Ethiopians’ (Egyptian) civilization and culture to the Italian peninsula and then on to the Greeks. Africans’ drama stage forefront aspect was expanded to include “Façade”—Italy’s medieval architectural term signifying the external face of a building, especially applied to the principle front. Then European religious societies applied it to Mystery Plays–initially enacted by priests depicting events in the life, death, and resurrection of the African god Osiris with associated African myth stories. Later, called Morality Plays—they depicted out of the European Bible the miracles of Good triumphing over Evil. Vice, the opposite of Virtue, was a practical joker in the plays. In C17 French, Façade referred not only to the front part of a building but with little or nothing behind it. In C19 it was used in a figurative way for the face one puts on to meet people; then on the small “faces” or surfaces of a gem; then Hollywood extended this for stage sets when filming movies so as to resemble only the front of a real building; and from there, many variations of these.
An example of a world-wide acceptable Façade is “Information”–always decorated frontispieces (facades) of Reality. Anything in Reality is multi-dimensional while Information is necessarily linear (one dimensional) in order for it to be conveyed to audiences. Any of its Sequences are Linear–meaning one word or image is followed by another and then another; or numbers are always strung out in a line and occur like stepping stones. To accept this “as is” means one is far, far from Reality. Deceptive Facades include: Type I–a False front with nothing behind it; Type II–a False Front with a sound Background; Type III–a False Front with an unsound Background. Whether good (e.g. entertainment), bad (e.g. evil deception), or indifferent, these are about Hypocrisy (false appearances of goodness, virtue)—a Greek word characterizing acting on the stage, as when one acts out the part(s) of a character in a play. Today, Hypocrisy implies the masking over of ones Real Self to thereby be in a different realm as one presents ones False Self while playing a role that pleases ones cult.
An example of gross manipulating and maneuvering what is in the Foreground and the Background is re-writing history to falsely say: “how great we are and how bad you are.” Subtle alterations—e.g. substitutions, additions, subtractions of a minor but payload degree can make the Message “SEEM” right or to be “Almost” right. A false front is to present what has a rich Background on all planes of existence as “All-or-None” and “Either/Or” when neither are the truth. Stereotypes may have two specks of checkered truths in either the Background and/or the Foreground but the presentation is that throughout both are “terrible”. The psychological concept of Projection messes with the audience—said the Nazi Joseph Goebbels–by accusing them (or opponents) of what the Performers are projecting onto them but of which the Performers are guilty. Officially, Projection is stated as humans defending themselves against their own unconscious negative impulses or qualities by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others. It is a form of Dissociation, as when one asserts or believes in cooperation but behaves competitively; protects love but acts with hate; proclaims good-will but practices racism–all without being aware in part or in whole of ones inconsistency. A job of Critical Thinking is to first remove masks so as see the ‘face’. jabaileymd.com
